As we all know there are so many things to do in the Eastern Suburbs and many of us that have lived in the East for a number of years feel like we’ve pretty much done everything there is to do, but have you ever thought about taking the kids out in the East to write letters?

There are many benefits in getting children to write letters.

Studies have shown that children who write handwritten letters have stronger reading and spelling skills, there’s no autocorrect when you’re writing a letter, so children learn how to spell a lot quicker when writing. It’s also a great way to get children off computers, phones and tablets. Most parents feel their children spend way too much time on their devices, writing letters gives children a much needed break from these devices, or in many cases the parents devices. It’s also great for their immagination as they have to think what they want to say. They express themselves a lot more with a hand written letter.

In the age of digital technology why not go back to basics and go on an adventure around the Eastern Suburbs and let your children write a letter or two, you might be suprised at how much they enjoy the experience.

Here’s our 5 best places to write a letter in the Eastern Suburbs.

1: Cooper Park – Bellevue Hill.

Cooper Park is a bit of a hidden gem in the East but it’s also one of the most beautiful places to go and write a letter with your children.

There’s a lovely cafe there which is nice and relaxing and you can also play some tennis as well. Then there’s the gorgeous rainforest which will get the kids’ imagination flowing.

There’s lots of great places to sit and write a letter.

2. Bronte Beach – Bronte.

Most of us in the East would have been to Bronte Beach for a swim in the ocean or the pool but have you ever thought about taking the kids to Bronte to write a letter?

The cafe’s across from the beach are great for a bite to eat and on those hot summer days it’s the perfect place for an ice cream or a milkshake.

Why not take the kids to Bronte and sit on the grass or in one of the huts and write a letter?

3. Centennial Park – Randwick.

You could spend all day in Centennial Park with the kids and never get bored, from playing on the ovals, riding your bike, having a bite to eat or sitting at the ponds while watching the birds and other wildlife.

There’s never a dull moment when you’re there.

Nature is great for the kids and it gets their imagination running wild.

There’s many great places to sit and write a letter.

You can sit and watch the swans, write a letter and draw the birds that you see as well.

4. Ivor Rowe Rock Pool – South Coogee.

Just up the road from Coogee Beach is Ivor Rowe Rockpool, many of us know it as the rockpool in South Coogee. For those that haven’t been there it’s just below Bunya Pde.

The small rockpool is a fun place for a dip in the ‘ocean’ or just to walk around and discover the sealife. In certain months of the year it’s a great place to spot whales.

There’s a stunning view of the ocean and it’s a great location to take the kids to write a letter, and if you’re lucky; you might even see a whale or two.

5. Duff Reserve – Point Piper.

With one of the best views of Sydney Harbour, Duff Reserve is a hidden gem in the East.

Located on Wolseley Road, the reserve is located in the northernmost point of Point Piper.

Though small in size, it’s the perfect secluded location to have a picnic, watch the boats go by and while you’re there write a letter. The kids will love that you’re so close to the water and the views of Sydney Harbour are breathtaking.

Why Writing Letters Is Still Important Today. Here’s What Your Child Can Learn From It

We tell you why the art of letter writing is still relevant in this digital age and in what ways it benefits your child

“How wonderful it is to be able to write someone a letter! To feel like conveying your thoughts to a person, to sit at your desk and pick up a pen, to put your thoughts into words like this is truly marvelous.” Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood)

The first recorded letter written by hand was by the Persian Queen Atossa around 500 BC. Little did she know that she was starting a trend that would be followed by generations after her, and this simple activity would turn into an art as well as a tool for change.

Letters have been an integral part of communication for centuries. Famous personalities and commoners alike put pen to paper and poured their hearts out. Parents wrote long letters about life to their children, revolutionaries inspired millions through words scribbled on torn pieces of paper and spies ferreted out little notes holding valuable pieces of information. For a long time, the world depended on letters for information.

But, with the advent of technology in the form of e-mails and text messages, letter writing has been reduced to just an art form that few with a fancy indulge in.

This brings up the question, ‘In this digital age, do our children need to know how to write a letter at all?’ The answer is Yes, and we give you a few good reasons.

Relevance of letter writing today

Here are some ways in which letters still hold value in this digital age

  •  For documentation: Letters are a good way to document and record important events, and information. They may also act as proof, which can hold good in a court of law.
  •  For getting instant attention: A handwritten letter is guaranteed to get instant attention rather than the numerous mails that keep popping in our inbox. A handwritten letter says that you care and are willing to give personal attention to the matter or the person addressed.
  •  For official communication: Official letters of communication are still used in many organizations. While a majority of them are printed, writing a letter detailing an action plan or a procedure adds a certain authority to the communication.

How your child can benefit from letter writing

Makes your child a better learner: When your child sits down to write a letter, he needs to focus. Unlike sending short text messages or e-mails, writing a letter requires undivided attention. Hence, it helps in processing information better. Mueller and Oppenheimer published a study titled, ‘The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking’, in the journal Psychological Science (2014). They found that students who took notes by hand performed better in tests than those who typed notes on a laptop. They stated, ‘The present research suggests that even when laptops are used solely to take notes, they may still be impairing learning because their use results in shallower processing. In three studies, we found that students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand.

Improves handwriting: There’s no doubt that practice makes for better penmanship. And, letter writing gives your child enough scope to do just that. Writing letters can also be a good way to help him become familiar with the concept of cursive writing.

Strengthens language skills: Unlike typing on a smartphone or computer, where words can easily be erased or rephrased, writing on paper is almost permanent. So, your child would need to think about what she is writing – the words she plans to use to put her thoughts on paper. This activity will encourage her to think more and look up words and phrases that’ll help her express herself better.

Helps in creative expression: Talking about expression, letter writing is one sure way of making your child think more creatively. For example, how best can she describe her first trip to the beach? Writing it all down in a letter requires time and focus. This makes the brain think creatively. So, trying to put words on paper can inspire your child’s creative expression.

Children are eager learners and can develop their writing skills in a number of ways. You can help your children when they first learn to write by talking to them about the ideas they are writing. This helps build their comprehension skills and engage more fully with what they are writing. Over time, and with regular practice, your children will develop fluency in writing and learn to think more deeply about the stories or information they write. ? Ponnuri Gopiikrishna, Handwriting Expert, Founder, Sree Bhagavathi Yoga Trust, Vijayawada

Above all, handwritten letters make for great memories and add that special personal touch. Encourage your child to write handwritten notes at first, and then progress to letters. This will not only benefit him but also encourage him to be creative and bring out the writer hidden within him.

The 1st of September is World Letter Writing day which this year fell on a Saturday.

The day before I visited a Catholic primary school in Sydney Australia as part of World Letter Writing Day. I spoke to children from the ages of 5 to 12 & they all wrote a letter, many of them for the very first time. One of the children had finished writing his letter & gave me his envelope. I looked at the envelope & it read: Adress Heven & in the corner he wrote: To God. I was a little confused & asked him who he wanted to send his letter to, the girl that was sitting next to him then said to me, “his mum died so he wants to send his letter to his mum in heaven”. I took a deep breath & said to him, “Would you like me to take this to the priest for you & ask him to say a prayer for your mum”? He said yes & started to do a drawing. It was an emotional moment for me.

Later that day I had the chance to speak to the boys teacher & I told him what had happened, he told me that the boy hadn’t really spoken about his mum but recently he had started writing to his mum which was the boys way of dealing with the loss of his mum & also in his own way, he felt like he had contact with his mum.

On the 1 September 2014 Richard Simpkin launched World Letter Writing Day at Waverley College in Sydney Australia.

The event gained major media exposure for WLWD and also for Waverley College where the media picked up the story and the school was able to get great positive exposure for promoting the art of letter writing. The children enjoyed writing letters to everyone from their parents to the local council. Many of the children had never written a letter before so it was an exciting lesson for them all.

If you would like Richard to attend your school to help teach the kids about writing letters then please send an email to richard@worldletterwritingday.com

Dear friends,

Happy World Letter Writing Day 2020.

Since I founded World Letter Writing Day in 2014 thousands of people from all around the world have picked up a pen or pencil & wrote a letter, in many cases for the very first time.

I have received many letters myself since 2014 from people just wanting to say thank you to me for encouraging them to write letters again.

A lot of people tell me that they used to write letters when they were younger, but as time goes on they have stopped, many used to have pen pals & they used to love writing & receiving letters from their pen pals.

As the years pass most of us have lost that special connection of writing to a pen pal.
A few months ago I started a World Letter Writing Day Pen Pal Facebook Group & since then hundreds of people have connected with one another & have become pen pals.

It’s obviously been a very difficult year with Covid 19 & because of this many of us at times are feeling lonely, scarred & anxious, I know I have felt like this sometimes throughout the year.

There has never been a more important time that right now to really connect with loved ones & friends, sure we can connect with them on social media, but if you really want to connect & make someone feel special then why not write them a letter?
You will feel great once you have written the letter & the person that receives your letter will feel very special.

It’s also a challenging time for us parents as well.

A few months ago my son started writing letters to his classmates during homeschooling & the response was incredibly positive from his school friends.

Most of his friends had never received a letter before & they all really enjoyed writing a letter back to him.

So this year for World Letter Writing Day lets really show those that we care about how very special they are by writing to them, you’ll really make someones day.

Happy World Letter Writing Day 2020!

In an age dominated by digital communication, there’s something uniquely special about sitting down to write a letter by hand. Whether it’s a heartfelt message to a loved one or a formal letter of appreciation, the act of writing by hand creates a personal connection that technology often cannot replicate. That’s why World Letter Writing Day, celebrated annually on September 1st, is an occasion to pause, reflect, and rekindle the art of letter writing.

What is World Letter Writing Day?

World Letter Writing Day is an international celebration of the timeless tradition of writing letters. The day encourages people around the world to put pen to paper and reconnect with the lost art of letter writing. It’s a day to appreciate the joy that comes from receiving a personal note and to acknowledge the thoughtful effort that goes into crafting a letter.

Founded in 2014, World Letter Writing Day reminds us that a letter, whether handwritten or typed, has the power to preserve history, share stories, and forge deep connections between individuals.

Why Write Letters?

In the hustle and bustle of our modern world, we often overlook the emotional impact a handwritten letter can have. Here are a few reasons why writing letters remains a cherished tradition:

  1. Personal Connection: Unlike a quick text or email, a handwritten letter is personal and thoughtful. It carries the writer’s unique handwriting, which makes the message feel intimate and genuine. Each stroke of the pen reflects the writer’s personality, making the connection even more meaningful.

  2. Sentimental Keepsake: A letter can be kept and treasured for years. The recipient can revisit it whenever they need a little reminder of the connection you share. In a world where messages can get lost in the digital ether, a physical letter is something tangible that can be saved and passed down through generations.

  3. Creativity & Expression: Letter writing provides a creative outlet. You can experiment with different styles, stationery, and even include drawings or sketches. Writing a letter allows you to express emotions, tell stories, and convey thoughts in a way that feels authentic and unhurried.

  4. Mindful Communication: Writing a letter requires focus and intention. It encourages you to slow down and carefully consider what you want to say, unlike the fast-paced nature of digital communication. This mindfulness allows for more meaningful, reflective exchanges.

  5. A Moment of Joy for the Recipient: Receiving a handwritten letter is an experience that evokes nostalgia and excitement. It’s a rare and treasured gift in today’s world, where a letter often feels more thoughtful and personal than any other form of communication.

How to Celebrate World Letter Writing Day

There are many ways to celebrate this special day! Here are a few fun and meaningful ideas to inspire you to take part:

  • Write a Letter to a Loved One: Take a moment to write a heartfelt letter to someone special. It could be a friend, family member, or someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Express your appreciation, share your thoughts, or just check in with them.

  • Send a Postcard from Your Travels: If you’re traveling or even just exploring your hometown, pick up a postcard and send it to a friend or relative. Let them know you’re thinking of them and share a little piece of your journey.

  • Start a Letter Writing Habit: Make letter writing a regular part of your life. You can write letters to loved ones, pen pals, or even yourself! Starting a habit of writing can help you foster deeper connections and create something memorable.

  • Encourage Kids to Write Letters: Help the younger generation appreciate the beauty of letter writing by encouraging them to write a letter to a friend, grandparent, or teacher. This can be a fun and educational way to teach them how to communicate thoughtfully and creatively.

  • Join the Conversation Online: While letters are personal, don’t forget to celebrate World Letter Writing Day online! Share your letter writing moments with others by using hashtags like #WorldLetterWritingDay to inspire others to pick up their pens.

Letter Writing Tips

If you’re new to letter writing or want to enhance your skills, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Choose Quality Paper: The type of paper you use can elevate the entire experience. Whether it’s simple stationery or personalized letterhead, the paper adds a touch of elegance to your letter.

  2. Start with a Personal Greeting: The greeting sets the tone for your letter. Whether it’s “Dear [Name]” or something more informal like “Hello [Name],” make sure it matches the level of intimacy you want to convey.

  3. Express Your Thoughts Clearly: Take time to organize your thoughts and express yourself clearly. Don’t rush through the letter—write as if you’re having a meaningful conversation with the recipient.

  4. Be Yourself: Don’t overthink it! Let your personality shine through in your letter. Whether you’re funny, sentimental, or poetic, a personal touch will make your letter memorable.

  5. Include a Handwritten Closing: End your letter with a warm closing, such as “With love,” “Sincerely,” or “Yours truly.” Sign your name with a flourish and perhaps add a little note or doodle to make it extra special.

Conclusion: The Power of Letters

World Letter Writing Day is a reminder that in a world filled with digital noise, there’s something timeless and magical about sending a handwritten letter. Whether it’s a simple note of gratitude or a heartfelt expression of love, a letter has the power to bring people closer, one page at a time.

So, on September 1st, why not take a moment to write a letter? Embrace the tradition and celebrate the joy of connecting through the written word. After all, some of the best conversations happen in the quiet solitude of putting pen to paper.

Start writing today and let your letters tell the story of your connection to the world!
